TDA to Host Farm Animal Exhibitor Workshops

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Department of Agriculture (TDA) is hosting four regional workshops across the state in November to increase awareness of health issues associated exhibiting animals at fairs, shows and farm events.

“These educational workshops are for agricultural fair managers, extension agents, livestock show and sales managers, agri-tourism owners, petting zoo owners and others who are involved in events where the general public interacts with animals,” said TDA Assistant Commissioner Joe Gaines.  “These workshops are important for helping participants learn how to properly exhibit farm animals while protecting public health and safety.”

The day workshops will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. as follows:

Nov. 1 – Nashville, Ellington Agricultural Center, Ed Jones Auditorium

Nov. 6 – Jackson, UT West Tennessee Research and Education Center

Nov. 8 – Knoxville, UT Agriculture Campus, Plant Biotech Building

Nov. 9 – Greeneville, Greene County Fairgrounds, Expo Building

Presenters from TDA’s Animal Health program, the University of Tennessee Extension, the Tennessee Department of Health and the Tennessee Association of Fairs will cover such topics as public health and disease prevention, animal care and facilities.   The program will also include panel discussions and information on how to reduce risk of E. coli and other diseases that are of concern to visitors of farm animal exhibitions.

The workshops are free, however participants should pre-register by calling TDA workshop coordinator Lynne Williams at (615) 837-5081, or for more information or directions, email lynne.williams@state.tn.us.
