Selecting Balled and Burlapped Trees

  1. When choosing a balled and burlaped tree (B&B), shake the tree.  If needles fall in great quantities, do not select it.
  2. Move the tree easily back and forth to see if the root ball is firmly connected to the tree.
  3. Estimate the diameter of the trunk at six inches above the soil level.  The root ball should be at least 12 times that amount.  For example, a 2-inch diameter tree should have a 24-inch root ball.
  4. Feel the root ball; it should not be broken or mushy.
  5. Store the tree outside in shade or cover the ball with mulch.  Do not bring the tree inside until time to decorate.
  6. If possible, place the tree in a cool room away from the fireplace and heater and out of the afternoon sun.  Keep the tree moist but do not over water.
  7. Do not keep the tree in the house longer than seven to ten days.
  8. Keep the lights off when not in use.
  9. Do not remove the tree directly from a warm house into freezing temperatures.  Move it instead to a sheltered area for a few days before planting.
  10. When ready to plant, carry the tree by its root ball and place it in a large, well-prepared hole, three to six inches larger than the root ball.  Make sure the soil on the walls of the hole is loose, not tightly packed.  Remove strings and burlap when planting, then mulch.  Water as needed, even in winter.
  11. To be sure your tree thrives for many years, select a tree that ordinarily grows in your region.
