The Orlinda Melon Company began with two family farms joining up to try growing watermelons in 2018. Jepson Farms and Pearson Farms have grown tobacco for generations. Seeing the declining market for tobacco and feeling we were in a sunsetting industry we decided to look for something to take the place of the tobacco crop. We joined forces to mitigate the financial risk and ramp up learning about and managing a new crop. Last year we added 50 acres of pumpkins to the partnership. This year we will grow 300 acres of seedless watermelons and 100 acres of pumpkins.
