Additional Information: My husband I have been farming for over 50 years on 2 farms in Roane County. In those years, when our family was young, we focused on raising and showing livestock and growing a vegetable garden. Now that the ki9ds are grown and moved away, I wanted something that I could enjoy doing in my senior years. In 2023, I decided I wanted to grow a U-Pick Lavender field and bedding plants to sell in a roadside stand. I started with only 4 lavender plants in 2023 and then added 50 in 2024. I opened my U-Pickl field in June/July 2025 with a great success. Although the community was a little puzzled by a lavender field in our small community, they came out to learn about and pick my wonderful lavender. In 2025, I now have around 100 plants and have added homemade products like candles, soaps, lotions, lavender heat pads, lavender wands, dried bouquets, teas, culinary buds. Next year, I plan to have a small lavender festival where I will have classes on how to make some of these items as well as lavender ice cream and desserts. In the spring and fall I grow and offer vegetable and flower bedding plants - concentrating on unique varieties that grow well in our local conditions. Customers were excited about these new varieties that weren't your average box store varieties. I was able to teach them about the varieties and how to properly plant them for good outcome and they loved the personal attention. I also added products such as homemade jams, jellies, breads, and canned produce from the garden. I also taught small classes in proper canning techniques. We had our first Fall Festival in 2024, with over 100 people in attendance. We had a chili cooking contest, pollinator stations for the kids with a working display hive, as well as other fall activities. In 2026, we will be adding a polycarbonate greenhouse that will also serve as a retail shop; as well as retrofitting our barn tack room into a shop for processing our lavender and adding a distilling station for producing essential oil. The lavender pick field was no longer just a dream—it has begun, and I can't wait to see where it goes! And as twilight settles over the farm, I whispered to the growing plants, “Grow strong, grow free, grow beautiful.” Their silent sprout would soon answer with color, scent, and life, marking the beginning of countless mornings like this one—filled with the simple joy of cultivating dreams from the soil beneath my fingers.
